10 Lessons From Empowered Patients By Angela Haupt

August 16, 2015 · 1 min read

Last year, Angela Haupt of US News and World Report, shared the story of ten people living their best despite having a chronic illness. I was humbled to be featured in this article. Here is what Angela wrote:

Cavallo, 38, of Chandler, Arizona, was fully functioning and healthy when he went numb from the waist down and lost the ability to walk – which led to a multiple sclerosis diagnosis at age 28.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the spring of 2005 and have since learned many lessons about living well with a chronic illness. The most important lesson I have learned, however, is to be your own advocate. No one knows you better than you. In order to be the best possible advocate for yourself, you need to educate yourself on your disease, as well as the ins and outs of the health care system. Research doctors and therapists who can help you, communicate openly and effectively with your health care providers, and most importantly – never give up hope. You are worth fighting for!”

If you are looking for inspiration today, read the lessons learned from the other 9 amazing people also featured in this article:
